Condition: Very good pre-owned antique condition. A number of small chips/fleabites throughout typical of age and use. Some staining in the bottom of the vessel. Scratches/shelf wear on base. Please see photos.
Details: Beautiful 19th century claret jug with cane cut crystal body. The silverplate mount is decorated with detailed hand-chased geometric patterns and scrolls, a spout with molded nude figure below, and ornate curved handle. No marks found.
The "Claret Jug" came to be in the 19th century when silversmiths began modifying the glass decanters that were used in the 18th century, adding plain silver bands and exchanging glass stoppers for hinged silver lids. In the latter part of the 19th century silver handles and larger mounts were added.
